Garden District & Uptown

Activities that may or may not include drinking but don’t necessarily have to or activities to in between eating and drinking and seeing music...

1.

St. Charles: St. Charles is a very famous street in New Orleans lined with plantation-style mansions. Many of which were working plantations back in the day. Some of the most beautiful houses I’ve seen. There is one house on the corner of St. Charles and State St. that goes all out for every holiday. If you are in town for either Halloween (especially Halloween) or Christmas, it is worth the walk. There are also some cool homes on Prytania.

2.

Graveyard Tour: In addition to the mansions, the graveyards in New Orleans are quite the spectacle. I won’t go into too much detail, but all of the graves are above ground due to flooding and are very ornate. You can book a tour that incorporates both the mansions and the graveyard. I went to one, and it was both informative and hilarious.

3.

Audubon Park: Audubon is a park that lay in between the Mississippi River and the Audubon Zoo. On Fridays, all of Tulane likes to bring beers and wine and watch the sunset. A perfect way to start the weekend. Regardless, it’s an excellent park and a great place to unwind.

4.

The Fly: A park that borders the Mississippi River and the Audubon Zoo. On Fridays, all of Tulane likes to bring beers and wine and watch the sunset. A perfect way to start the weekend. Regardless, it’s an awesome park and great place to unwind.

5.

TulaneCoolest school in the world!

6.

Magazine Street: A long street full of shops, galleries, and restaurants that stretches from Uptown through the Garden District all the way to the Central Business District. Very trendy and gentrified. It is a couple of miles, but I would encourage taking a stroll through its entirety if the weather is anything better than rain. They try not to allow large-scale chains along the street, but there is a Whole Foods, and I heard that a Chipotle is opening. Similar to Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach/Los Angeles and S Congress Street in Austin. There are shops of all kinds, whether it's clothing, furniture, books, art, etc. Aside from great restaurants, some popular places include Peaches (my favorite), Ashley Longshore (flashy art gallery), and Funky Monkey (costume store).

7.

Street Car: An inefficient yet cheap and fun way to get across the city in an untimely manner. Another famous symbol of the town and frequently mentioned throughout literature.

8.

Peaches Records: One of my favorite gems in NOLA. A family-run record store. The record store is very active in the New Orleans community, whether it be with charitable work or the music scene. They frequently offer tickets to shows, welcome local and regional talent, and host events for all ages. It provides a wide variety of new and classic records in store. Not to mention, the store has a fantastic social media presence. Give them a follow on the gram at @peachesrecords.
