1.
Waffles on Maple: A Kosher waffle restaurant owned by an Orthodox Jewish family. Even though I do not love waffles, they serve them well with crazy savory and sweet combinations. They have weird hours.
2.
Mint: A Vietnamese bistro. Top-notch pho and vermicelli bowls. Very cheap and very easy. They also have excellent spring rolls. One of my favorites. Really everything is delicious here, and they have the friendliest staff. Although this is typically a Sunday night endeavor, I hear they have great cocktails, as well.
3.
Good Bird: A salad and sandwich station that is famous for its rotisserie chicken. The Larry Bird sandwich is excellent. The Sue Bird salad is excellent. Do not miss the chicken! I went through several punch cards for free meals.
4.
Ba Chi: The classic BYOB local place. Bring a magnum of cheap wine and fill up on “bacos” aka Vietnamese tacos. They have a ton of variations.
5.
Chais Delachaise: A local French restaurant with good food and wine. Common first date spot for Tulane students because it is walking distance to campus and isn’t much of a scene. Affordable.
6.
Felipe's: A New Orleans rendition of Chipotle. Bomb nachos, probably some of the best in the city. As it is New Orleans, they have a bar. Cheap, easy, and quick. They chop up the ingredients for you. They also have multiple locations. I love their nachos.
7.
Panchita's: Good Mexican place, go here instead of La Casita. If you like La Casita over this place, you’re wrong. They have chips and salsa that I don’t believe they charge you for, which is a win in itself. Additionally, they have daily specials, including $2 tacos for Taco Tuesdays that you can accompany with a refreshing $4 margarita.
8.
Poke Loa: My favorite poke place in New Orleans. It is becoming quite successful, and they have several locations. Poke in New Orleans may sound a bit fishy, but if you are craving it, this is the place to go.
9.
Chill Out Cafe: A decent Thai restaurant on Maple Street, very close to where I lived. Perfect for Thai comfort food when you are in need. They also serve breakfast.
10.
Bouree: A great place for wings and sandwiches. It is the more casual sister restaurant to Boucherie.
11.
EmpaNOLA: A tiny empanada factory that initially had a location in Auction House Market. They hand make and bake all of their empanadas in house and offer a unique variety of traditional and New Orleans/multicultural twists.
Local Spots
Restaurants that I attended regularly or semi-regularly while living in Uptown. Even in New Orleans, not every meal can be prepared by a James Beard Award winning chef. Here are some great places, most of which are relatively close to Tulane University's campus, that are honorable mentions to the main list.
